remove.bg Review 2026: Closing December 1, Prices Until Then

MBy Mucahit KayaUpdated Oct 26, 20263.0/5 · Fast, clean cutouts on everyday photos in dated user reports, and a free preview anyone can check without an account or card. Pros

  • Fast, clean cutouts on everyday photos, the strength named in dated Trustpilot reviews from Sander (December 2025), Catherine (March 2026) and David Pires (October 2026)
  • A free preview on the website, with no account or card, lets anyone check the cutout before paying
  • remove.bg's shutdown terms protect existing subscribers: a monthly plan's final renewal on or after November 1 is free, and yearly plans get a pro-rata refund with no action needed

Cons

  • The standalone site, the self-service API, the desktop app and the Photoshop plugin all stop on December 1, 2026, so anything built on them needs a replacement now
  • Pay-as-you-go credits bought today expire on December 1, 2026, and the smallest pack costs $1.00 per image
  • The free download is a 0.25-megapixel preview, against 25 megapixels for a paid credit, according to remove.bg's own 2023 reply to a reviewer
  • Reported failures on logos and enclosed shapes, which remove.bg's own reply calls challenging for automated removal

remove.bg is an AI background-removal service sold by the image: you upload a photo, it returns the subject on a transparent background, and a full-resolution download costs one credit. It has run as a website, desktop app, Photoshop plugin and API, and has been part of Canva since 2021.

Is remove.bg shutting down?

Yes. remove.bg's standalone website will no longer be available from December 1, 2026 at 9:00am CET, per a banner on its pages and its shutdown FAQ on October 26, 2026. Background removal moves into Canva, and API access moves to Leonardo.ai.

On December 1 the website and accounts close (export invoices and the credit usage report first), the self-service API stops accepting requests, and the Photoshop plugin and desktop app end. Enterprise API contracts continue.

What happens to my remove.bg credits and subscription?

Pay-as-you-go credits expire on December 1, 2026, and the FAQ recommends using them before then. Subscriptions end automatically on December 1 with no further charge. A monthly plan's final renewal on or after November 1 is free. A yearly plan with unused time after December 1 gets a pro-rata refund to the original payment method, with no action needed.

How do I cancel my remove.bg subscription?

You cancel in your account at remove.bg/dashboard, and remaining credits stay usable until the end of the billing period, per remove.bg's pricing FAQ.

How much does remove.bg cost per image?

remove.bg costs between $0.07 and $1.00 per full-resolution image, depending on how many credits you buy and whether you subscribe. The smallest purchase is 3 credits for $3, and the cheapest monthly plan is $9 for 40 credits, about $0.23 an image. These are the prices on remove.bg/pricing on October 26, 2026; the page shows US dollars, has no region selector, and showed no yearly billing option that day.

Pay-as-you-go packPricePrice per image
3 credits$3$1.00
10 credits$9$0.90
75 credits$49$0.65
200 credits$99$0.50
500 credits$199$0.40
1,200 credits$399$0.33
4,000 credits$999$0.25
8,000 credits$1,699$0.21

Pay as you go vs subscription: which is cheaper?

A subscription is cheaper per image at every size remove.bg sells. 200 credits cost $39 on a monthly plan and $99 as a pack, so the plan is less than half the price for the same images.

Monthly planPrice per monthPrice per image
40 credits$9$0.23
200 credits$39$0.20
500 credits$89$0.18
1,200 credits$189$0.16
2,800 credits$389$0.14
5,000 credits$589$0.12
10,000 credits$989$0.10
25,000 credits$2,150$0.09
75,000 credits$5,450$0.07

The page also lists 7,500, 15,000 and 50,000-credit plans at $789, $1,389 and $3,950. With five weeks left, the $9 plan is the cheapest way to get 11 to 40 full-size images before December 1, and the $3 pack is the smallest outlay for one to three.

Do remove.bg credits expire?

Yes, on two clocks. Under remove.bg's general terms (updated September 9, 2026), monthly credits on any plan started on or after October 22, 2025 expire at the end of each cycle; older plans rolled credits over up to five times the monthly budget. And every remaining credit expires at shutdown on December 1, 2026.

What does the remove.bg API cost?

The remove.bg API uses the same credits as the website, one per full-resolution image and a quarter per preview, according to the pricing FAQ. The self-service API stops on December 1, and the pricing page now sends developers to Leonardo.ai for API pricing, under a Leonardo announcement dated August 28, 2026. We did not read Leonardo's API price list or remove.bg's rate limits for this review.

Is remove.bg really free?

remove.bg is free only for a small preview. Anyone can upload on the website and download the cutout without an account or card, but that file is 0.25 megapixels, while a paid credit unlocks up to 25 megapixels. Those figures come from remove.bg's own reply to a Trustpilot reviewer in November 2023.

That reviewer, Massimo Giassi, saw his file drop from 1.7 MB to 303 KB, and wrote: "writing FREE in the title and then anyone who tries it will notice the limitation". Previews are free only on the website; through the desktop app, plugins and API a preview costs a quarter credit.

How to use remove.bg for free

Upload the image on the remove.bg homepage and download the preview, with no credit spent and no sign-up; check your hardest image (hair, a logo, glass) at this stage. A credit is spent only on the full-resolution download, and that option ends on December 1, 2026.

When do you need to pay for remove.bg?

You need to pay once the cutout must be larger than about 500 by 500 pixels, which is what 0.25 megapixels works out to. A profile picture can live with that; a zoomable product photo or a print file cannot.

A seller adding 50 products a month with four photos each processes 200 images, the $39 plan at about $0.20 per image. That seller has at most one more month of remove.bg and should move to a tool that will exist in January.

Can I use remove.bg cutouts commercially?

It depends on the plan. Section 3.2 of remove.bg's general terms says the scope of use, commercial or non-commercial, "is based on the tariff chosen by the Customer", and bars commercial use of output from a non-commercial tariff. The pricing page does not say which plan carries which scope, so check the plan description at checkout before using cutouts in listings or ads.

Does remove.bg keep my uploaded images?

remove.bg says it deletes uploads soon after processing, without naming a period. Its privacy policy (updated July 16, 2025) says it provides the results for download and will "delete them shortly after". Accounts close on December 1, 2026.

How good is remove.bg's background removal?

Dated Trustpilot reviews describe remove.bg as fast and clean on everyday photos and less dependable on logos and enclosed shapes. Sander wrote in December 2025 that it "removes backgrounds from images within seconds and does a surprisingly clean job, even with complex edges". Catherine wrote in March 2026: "Accurately removes backgrounds. I constantly use it in projects". David Pires called it, in October 2026, "my go to whenever I need to remove a background".

Where do reported cutouts fail?

The reported failures are logos, an editing-brush error and a claimed recent drop in quality. Michael wrote in February 2026 that "The AI was confused by my logo image and removed far more than the just the background", and remove.bg replied that logos with "enclosed shapes can sometimes be challenging". Pica wrote in March 2026 that the magic brush kept returning an "unknown error". Ashrith Ayushman wrote in October 2026: "It used to work properly. It now does not". Three reports cannot show a failure rate, but they name the files to try on the free preview first.

What do remove.bg users report?

We cite 17 dated reviews from remove.bg's Trustpilot page, each linked to its own permalink: five about billing, five about the free version, six about cutout quality and errors, and one about support. The page showed a TrustScore of 2.7 from 206 reviews on October 26, 2026. Trustpilot weights that score toward recent reviews, so no share of happy users can be read from it.

The free-version reviews split three negative, two positive. Dave Kim wrote in February 2026 that the free result was "A crappy preview version, while the proper resolution image costs you a monthly payment". For Game wrote that "you can hardly use it without payment" (February 2026). Geoff Scott wrote in July 2026: "Thank you for the free solution to this need". Ikram Ullah wrote in June 2026, in Hindi-Urdu, that the precision of the free service is hard to find elsewhere (our translation). On support, Jess wrote in March 2026 that the team was "Very kind, helpful and very thorough in their responses".

What do remove.bg users report about billing?

Five reviews describe a charge the writer did not expect, and remove.bg's public replies dispute four of them as not matching its pricing. Jacqui Orly wrote in October 2026 that the service was "only really unclear about costs ..50p for 24 hours then take the full price £34." Sam Raouf described the same £0.50 trial followed by £34 a month in October 2026. Andreea Dee wrote in November 2025: "I never received any email reminder, warning, or notification about a renewal or upcoming charge." ng aik chung garrett wrote in September 2026 that a card was charged without the reviewer's knowledge.

remove.bg replied to Jacqui Orly and Sam Raouf that the 50p-then-£34 structure "doesn't match remove.bg's actual pricing" and may come from a "similarly-named website", and told Andreea Dee it offers no free trials that convert into subscriptions. A fifth reviewer, posting as customer, wrote in August 2026 that the payment was made "on the remove-bg.net website", and remove.bg replied it is not affiliated with that site. We cannot settle which site each reviewer paid. remove.bg's own pricing page on October 26 listed no trial and no £34 plan, so check that the address bar reads remove.bg before entering a card.

Does remove.bg's "free" claim match what users get?

remove.bg presents background removal as free, and the free result is a 0.25-megapixel preview: the cutout is free to see, the full-size file is paid, the gap Massimo Giassi, Dave Kim and For Game each describe.

What has changed at remove.bg?

remove.bg is shutting down: the standalone site, accounts and self-service API end on December 1, 2026, after a year in which new subscriptions stopped rolling credits over and the API was announced as moving to Leonardo.ai. The dated record follows.

What should I use instead of remove.bg?

remove.bg's own answer is Canva for single images and batches, and Leonardo.ai for automated or high-volume API work. Sellers who only need product cutouts, and developers who want no per-call fee, have other options.

The Photoroom price is from our review's read of photoroom.com/pricing on October 23, 2026, which also found that its paid plans charge no AI credits for background removal and its free plan is personal, non-commercial use only. Our ranking of AI design tools compares them side by side.

How do I remove backgrounds in bulk after remove.bg closes?

Canva's bulk background removal is the route remove.bg names for both batch work and its desktop app. Until December 1, the remove.bg desktop app still processes folders at one credit per full-size file.

remove.bg vs Canva background remover

After December 1, only Canva's remover will exist. Until then, remove.bg sells each full-size cutout as a credit, while a Canva subscriber already has the same technology in the editor; current plan prices are in our Canva review.

Who should not buy remove.bg now?

Nobody should buy more remove.bg credits than they can use by December 1, 2026. Developers on the self-service API should migrate now instead of topping up. A store that needs cutouts every month needs a tool that continues past December.

Is remove.bg worth it in 2026?

Only for jobs you will finish before December 1, 2026. For those, the $9 plan for 40 credits is the cheapest route to 11-40 full-size cutouts, and the free preview still covers small jobs at no cost. For anything ongoing, plan the move to Canva, Leonardo.ai's API or another tool now, and export your invoices before the site closes.

How did we review remove.bg?

We did not test remove.bg hands-on, and no images were run through it for this review. Prices, credit rules and shutdown terms were read from remove.bg's pricing page, FAQ, general terms and privacy policy in a browser on October 26, 2026. The 17 user reports come from remove.bg's public Trustpilot page, each checked word for word on the rendered page and linked to its own permalink; four others from the same period were left out as title-only or as accusations without detail. No material supplied by remove.bg or submitted through our site was used. We re-check this page monthly and will update it after December 1, 2026.

Does AI Tools Police earn a commission on remove.bg?

Photoroom is an AI photo editor built for product photos, and it suits online sellers who need clean cutouts and listing images every month. Its US prices start at $89.99 a year or $12.99 a month for Pro, with 1,000 exports a month. The free plan is licensed for personal, non-commercial use only, and recent Trustpilot reviews center on trial charges and summer 2026 app changes. We scored Photoroom 3.9 out of 5.

The free plan is genuinely usable but capped and watermarked. An archived August 26, 2026 capture of Picsart's own pricing page shows two paid tiers, both metered in credits: Pro at $15 a month, or $10.50 billed yearly, and Ultra at $47 a month, or $37.50 billed yearly, priced per seat. This page previously put Ultra at about $18 to $25 and that was wrong. The product ceiling is unchanged: Picsart's background remover trails Remove.bg and Photoroom on fine, stray-hair detail.
